  Learn about us

The Crested Butte Arts Festival is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to encourage and promote the artistic and cultural environment of the Gunnison Valley. Along with the event itself, the Festival fulfills its year-round art education and outreach mission through programs and initiatives, including our Art Grants, partnerships, and in-school residencies.

The Festival is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of a variety of art, business, and community leaders from Gunnison County. The organization has one year-round director, one seasonal part-time employee, and a production crew. The Festival could not operate without the 100+ volunteers who give their time each year in a variety of capacities. The Festival office is located at 601 Elk Avenue in the Chamber of Commerce building in Crested Butte, CO 81224.

 Exhibitor Parking During Festival

There are two public lots located close to the Festival site: (1) 1st & Elk; and (2) 6th & Elk (behind the Visitor Center at the 4-way stop). Overnight parking for trailers and RVs is at the CB Community School parking lot, which is located on the east side of the highway as you are entering Crested Butte from Gunnison on 135. General parking in Crested Butte is allowed on side streets; your vehicle must be ON the gravel, inside the curb, and parallel-parked. As always, follow all parking rules in order to ensure your car, trailer, and other belongings remain safe and in place.

  Display Requirements

Exhibitors are responsible for providing their own 10 feet x 10 feet booth structures including: white canopy, racks, tables, display units or all other fixtures suitable for outdoor use. Exhibitors are encouraged to be prepared for inclement weather with appropriate rain covers, tie-downs and weights (required!). Booths must be properly weighted and weights, ropes, etc. must not extend past the perimeter of the 10 feet x 10 feet tent (or double tent if artist purchased this option). Artist MUST KEEP GUTTERS CLEAR in the event of rain. Please set your 10 x 10 booth up 12 inches away from the curb to prevent flooding and water blockages.

Tent awnings are allowed and must not extend off the front of tents any further than 2 feet. The Crested Butte Fire Protection office has asked that we abide by these rules for safety concerns. The awning installation must be something that can be removed quickly in the event of an emergency should an emergency vehicle need access to the festival grounds. No art is allowed to be placed under the tent awnings; all art work must be placed inside the perimeter of the 10 feet x 10 feet tent. Your awning/canopy/tent shall be fully secured before setting up anything else. Be sure that your method of securing your canopy/awning/tent to the ground does not create an additional risk.

The Arts Festival site does not allow for staking in, as stated in the Artist Contract: ANY PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE ARTIST’S ACTION SUCH AS STAKING, DIGGING, ATTACHING TO STRUCTURES, PAINT SPILLS OR STAINS, ETC., WILL BE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ARTIST. ANY FINANCIAL CLAIMS WILL BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PARTY AT FAULT. Exhibitors must leave their space in the same condition in which they received it, free of trash or other debris.

*More information, booth and set up requirements, rules and regulations, etc. are provided in the application and Rules of Show. Please review that document prior to arriving to the festival, and contact the festival director if you have any questions.

  Artist Attendance Requirements

Reasonable breaks excepted, all exhibiting artists are required to be onsite, in their booths for the duration of the show. Show hours are reasonable, and booth-sitters are available throughout the weekend.

Judging begins promptly at 10 am on Saturday. Three Judges will start at differing locations to ensure all artists are visited by at least one judge before 1 pm. Judges are on a tight schedule and will not have much time to spend talking with exhibiting artists. Please be mindful of time constraints and refrain from engaging them in lengthy discussions.

Judges will place a small colored sticker on booth signs after they judge. Please be sure to DISPLAY YOUR BOOTH SIGN prominently so the judges can access it easily. A total of six awards will be given: Best of Show, 2nd & 3rd Place, and three Juror’s Awards. Award winners will be exempt from the jury process for the next year’s Festival, with the top three winners also receiving complimentary booth spaces.

  Artist Awards Party

Join us for the Artist Awards Party Saturday from 5:30 – 7 pm at Mt. Crested Butte. Dinner, cocktails and awards will be included! Artist Awards will be announced promptly at 6:15 pm!

Sales Tax

All artists MUST fill out a sales tax form, which is included in the artist packet, and pay sales tax at the end of the Festival. Details:

  • Crested Butte tax rate: 9.4%
  • Sales tax payment location: 601 Elk Avenue
  • Sales tax payment day/time: 5-7 pm, Sunday
  • Method of sales tax payment: cash or check only

We will also have a few volunteers on site collecting sales tax forms and payments from artists unable to leave their booths.

NO VEHICLES MAY ENTER THE SITE UNTIL 6 PM on Sunday. Please have everything packed and dismantled prior to moving your vehicle on site. Hand carry & dolly out as much as you can to prevent gridlock and PLEASE be considerate of your fellow artists.

Crested Butte is a safe and clean community in which to live, work and play. People routinely walk in the area of the Arts Festival site during both daylight and evening hours. Security for your belongings is your responsibility and requires your active involvement. Use precautions you would normally take when traveling and when participating in any outdoor event to protect your art, cash and other treasured belongings.

The Arts Festival site will be routinely patrolled from the time streets are closed to prepare the site for the event until the streets are re-opened to traffic after the site has been cleared. Uniformed police officers as well as hired and volunteer security will be on duty. Nevertheless, artists are solely responsible for the security of their exhibits and equipment. The Arts Festival recommends removal of all valuables from the exhibit area each night, and the placement of all displays and related materials within the exhibitor’s canopy.

A Safety Control Crew will be in place to aid in crowd control, working with the vendors and artists and assisting with awning removal in the event of an emergency. Should an emergency occur that requires emergency vehicle access, the crew will work quickly with artists to bring down awnings so that the vehicle(s) may pass safely. In addition to monitoring for emergencies and potential awning removal, they will also monitor the festival to ensure dogs and bikes will not be on the festival grounds.
