Firebird Theater

Firebird Theater was formed in May of 2023 with the aim of promoting accessible theater in the Gunnison Valley. This August, the theater group will be presenting an exciting Star Wars inspired interpretation of Macbeth. Firebird received funding to provide professional stage makeup for the actors, transforming them into non-human species, while creating even more enchanting stage drama. With the guidance of a professional makeup and costume designer, the Firebird troop will also offer a free community workshop in stage makeup and a sneak peek of the new creatures featured in Macbeth. This summer, be prepared for an unforgettable experience filled with combat, betrayal, blood, prophecies, and ultimately madness and death!

The Crested Butte School of Dance (CBSOD) has been a staple of the Crested Butte community for more than four decades. Its mission is to encourage creativity, self-expression, and personal development through dance. The CBSOD received funding to create original dance performances that will be showcased at local events, serving as a form of community outreach. Its goal is to inspire people of all ages to take dance classes and become dance teachers or volunteers. By doing so, the CBSOD aims to promote the art of dance and foster a love for it in the community.

The Trailhead Children’s Museum founded in 2008, is dedicated to fostering exploration, creativity, and learning among children and families through discovery-based play, art programs, and community events in Crested Butte. The Trailhead has received funding to host Community Creators Weekend Workshops. For 10 months out of the year, the Trailhead will host a monthly two-hour workshop. These workshops will feature local artists leading art lessons based on their expertise to elementary students. By showcasing local talent and providing resources for budding artists, this project aims to inspire the next generation of creatives in Crested Butte while enhancing community arts education.

Hay Lil Drone Media

Hayden Lilly Daiber, a professional artist, drone pilot, and whitewater boater, received funding for her new experimental photography project “The Dammed Rivers.” This series explores the juxtaposition of life in the high Rockies, a crucial water source for the Western United States, and the impact of human-made dams on local waterways. Hayden Lilly will document each of the 26 recorded waterway dams in the Gunnison Valley, capturing the free-flowing waters into its purgatory, the dam. These images will be presented in an educational gallery show with information from local conservation organizations. This will provide a platform for community members to engage with the visual narrative and gain insights into the impacts of dams on local waterways.

Heather Bischoff is the founder of BiSH Productions, which specializes in creating public art installations such as murals, sculptures, and immersive environments. BiSH has received funding to create a unique art projection that will utilize light, shadow, and fabric to showcase the value of water in the arid west. By using moving imagery of water, this project aims to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation. The immersive environment will be located in Crested Butte and will invite the public to experience and engage in alternative landscapes, sparking conversations about the significance of water conservation.

Sampling of Previous
Artistic Enrichment Grant recipients

  • Crested Butte Community School art students received instruction from street art muralist - Bimmer Torres, on how to collaboratively paint an iconic and impactful mural from concept to creation. The Crested Butte Center for the Arts coordinated bringing this inspiring project to life, and the mural remains on display at the CBCS campus.

  • The Wheels of Intention community collaboration was envisioned by Caroline McLean who conceived of the project while on a pilgrimage to Bhutan in 2017. Caroline’s vision of giving back to her mountain community became clear – install prayer wheels to Crested Butte! The project brought twenty four separate artists, non-profit organizations & business sponsors together in collaboration to produce eight uniquely crafted prayer wheels, displayed throughout Crested Butte. • The Trailhead's Art Bar is a place to create, tinker, and play. The Art Bar was a popular attraction at the festival, and it continues to be a huge hit. The Trailhead also worked with the Wheels of Intention project to teach youngsters about the wheels and help them make their own (slightly different) versions- see them in the photo below. These upcycled plastic wheels were decorated and created by kids and actually spin!

  • Artkitect Joe Bob Merritt is a visionary community conspirator, who has been Vinotok Grump Master since 2010, responsible for designing, planning, crafting and executing the ceremonial Grump effigy. In 2021 we funded a grant request from Vinotok to design and fabricate their central alter. The Fire Temple is a nomadic space/place/form wherein meaning making cultural rituals are literally "held together" by way of the place making nature that occurs during the act of fabricating round spaces by the hands of artists.
